William married Laura Christina Melcher, of Adams, Muskingum, Ohio, on February 4, 1890 in Washington, D.C. Christina was the daughter of Casper Franklin Melcher, Sr. and Elizabeth Stivison. They had one child, a daughter, Laura Elinor Slater Gauss, born in 1891.
William was an expert typist and telegrapher and, during World War I, he handled many of the longest and most secret cablegrams of official content from European governments to top U.S. executives and statesmen in Washington, D.C.
William died May 20, 1919, in Washington, D.C. William's wife Laura died in 1949, and his daughter Laura died in 1952.
