Carl Hull
December 25, 1921 - November 27, 2015
Resident of Santa Clara

Beloved father and valiant veteran of two American wars Carl Lee Hull passed into the home of his heavenly Father on November 27 after a brief stay at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Palo Alto, Calif. He was 93.

Carl was born in Ottumwa, Iowa to Roy and Nancy (nee Ancell) Hull on Christmas Day 1921. He was the oldest of 10. After the early death of his mother and dispersion of nearly all his siblings to various orphanages, he left Ottumwa and joined the U.S. Army in 1937 at age 16.

He spent his first year as a soldier caring for military horses. He left the Army after a few years but enlisted again, in the U.S. Navy, when WWII came to America in 1941. He fought at Normandy with the 111th Construction Battalion (Seabees), where he operated a fifty-caliber anti-aircraft machine gun from a landing craft delivering troops and supplies to Omaha Beach. After WWII he left the Navy, re-enlisted in the Army, and fought in the Korean War, where he oversaw the construction of officers' quarters at Hialeah Compound, Pusan. He rose the ranks to E-7, ultimately becoming a marksmanship instructor at Fort Eustis, Va.; he took first place in countless shooting matches across the United States and brought home more trophies and medals than he had room to display.

He retired from the Army in 1962 and moved his family from Virginia to Santa Clara, Calif., where he served as a USPS letter carrier for 20 years. Ultimately Carl lived in Santa Clara and attended St. Justin's Catholic Church for 53 years.

Carl's first wife Mary (nee Mannina), with whom he had four daughters: Nancy Segovia, Virginia Welch, Barbara Hull, and Marianne Hull, died in 1989. His second wife, Lucie (nee Ortiz), died Nov. 19. Carl was the grandfather of 12 and great-grandfather of 11. He was preceded in death by six brothers: Glenn Hull, Roy Hull, Daniel Hull, Donald Cain, Larry Barnhill, Robert Ryken, and one sister, Betty Sowie. He was preceded in death also by a grandson, Gregory B. Welch. He is survived by two sisters, Genevieve Baird of North Liberty, Iowa and Esther Kennis of Red Wing, Minn.

Carl will be especially missed by his daughters for his quirky ways, funny sayings, ability to fix anything, and unique way of charming dead plants back to life, especially orchids. He collected just about everything: If you needed some odd tool, you'd find it in Dad's garage. He was an amazing gardener, carpenter, mechanic, beekeeper, winemaker, furniture refinisher, genealogist, food canner, and above all, flea market fan extraordinaire. Oh we will miss you Dad!

Services will be held Friday, Dec. 4 at St. Justin's Church, 2655 Homestead Road, Santa Clara at 11 a.m. Viewing will be held 10:30-11:00 at the church. Burial will be at Mission City Memorial Park, 420 Winchester Road, Santa Clara at 12:30. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Alameda Family Funeral & Cremation, 12341 Saratoga-Sunnyvale Rd, Saratoga. 408-257-6262.
