Ralph Dewitt Shaffer, 81, of Given, W. Va. died Dec. 30, 2003, in Jackson General Hospital, Ripley, W. Va.
He was born Aug. 28, 1922, in Charleston, W. Va., a son of the late Thomas Stanton and Cora Mae Phillips Shaffer. He was also preceded in death by a son, Ralph D. Shaffer Jr.; and nine brothers. He worked as a millwright for over 30 years and was a member of Union Local 1755. He was a member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church, Charleston, and sang in the Shaffer Brothers Gospel Quartet. He was an Army Air Forces veteran of World War II. Surviving are his wife, Mary T. Shaffer of Given; daughter, Levita Jackson Saunders of Winston-Salem, N.C.; five grandchildren, Ralph D. Shaffer III, Sherry Davis, James Allen Shaffer, Thomas R. Jackson and Julie Edge; and 14 great-grandchildren.
