Squire John Hows was born on May 17, 1811 in North Carolina, the son of John Carroll House (1776-1855) and Susannah Penelope (King) House (1771-1851). One of his brothers was Rasa Jerome Hows (1806-1858), who also lived and died in Davidson County.
He was married about to Katherine Durace Jones (1820–1894), the daughter of Jarvis Jones (ca 1770– ) and his wife Jenny (Richardson) Jones (ca 1786– ).
Squire was 77 years old passed away on November 13, 1888 at his Bellevue, Tennessee farm and was buried on that farm in the family burial ground.
