Thomas E. Burkhardt, 85, of Milton, died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2006, at the Bedford Health Care in Bedford, Ky.

He was born in Trimble County on May 1, 1921, the son of Frederick and Myrtle Holderfield Burkhardt. He was a self-employed construction worker, a 50-year Mason, and was a staff sergeant in the 15th division of the U.S. Air Force, serving in North Africa and Italy during World War II.

He is survived by one daughter, Catherine Steiner of Cincinnati; two sons, Dennis Burkhardt and Jason Burkhardt, both of Florida; one sister, Bernice Gross of Milton; several grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ruth Burkhardt; three sisters, Inez Varble, Esther Dudley, and Fanny Schott; three brothers, Emerson, James and Kenneth W. Burkhardt.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 14, 2006, at the Wood-Oakley Funeral Home, with burial at the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Madison. The Madison American Legion Post No. 9 will conduct military rites at the cemetery.

Friends may call a the funeral home from 5 to 8 p.m. on Sunday and after 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Monday.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of a donation to Mt. Byrd Christian Church building fund.
