She was baptized as an infant in the Beresford Methodist Church, and she accepted Jesus as her Savior at the age of thirteen. Her faith was a very important part of her life and it showed through in everything she did. Loreen attended Gothland Country School for eight years and graduated from Beresford High School in 1943. She studied at Eastern State Teachers College (Dakota State) in Madison, SD then taught country schools for four years.
Loreen married Boyd Knudson November 28, 1947. Nine children were born to this union and Loreen was kept busy with their large family. Boyd bought his father’s insurance agency and had the office in their home so Loreen could help Boyd with the business.
She was active at Scandia Lutheran Church where she held several offices in WELCA and enjoyed singing in the choir. She belonged to the Tri County Club and was active in Christian Women’s Club for several years. Loreen loved spending time with her family, reading and being with her friends. Loreen has kept a journal since the age of 11 and was faithful to write in it daily.
Survivors include her six daughters, Karen (Larry) Ellis, Centerville, Joyce (Marty) Buseman, Centerville, Kathy (Larry) Schultz, Sioux Falls, Pam (Barry) Hughes, Alcester, Jan (Doug) Stevens, and Lori (Kevin) Hecht; two sons, DeLee (Vickie) Knudson, and Dale (Sherrie) Knudson, all of Centerville; son-in-law, Larry Johnson; 23 grandchildren, Brad (Kim) Preheim, Bryan Preheim, Amy (Tom) Erickson, Jodi (Jason) Lounsbery, Kevin (Becky) Ellis, Stephanie (Andy) McCaulley, Matt Johnson, Jeff Schultz, Corey Ellis (Laura Bohlman), Dustin (Maggie) Stevens, Rachael (Cody) Carstensen, Jake Hughes (Christina Kuperus), Aaron (Jasmine) Buseman, Jeremy (Michele) Schultz, Brady Ellis, Katie Knudson, Preston (Shalee) Stevens, Kyle Knudson, Justin (Christine) Hughes, Adam Schultz, Tyler (Natalie) Hecht, Heather Hecht, and Stacy Hecht; 33 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great granddaughter; two brothers, Delmar (Irene) Olsen of Wessington Springs and Kendall (Mary) Olsen of Yankton and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Loreen was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter, Sharon Johnson; son-in-law, Gary Preheim; grandson, Lance Buseman; great-granddaughter, Kylie Ellis; two brothers and their wives, Melvin (Thelma) Olsen and Odell (Evelyn) Olsen.
Funeral services will be 2PM Friday, November 6th at Scandia Lutheran Church in Centerville. Visitation will be 5-8PM Thursday at Scandia’s fellowship hall with the family present from 6-8PM and a prayer service at 7PM.
