Viola G. Lilly Buckland, 88 of Forest Hill, began singing alto in Heaven’s choir on Sunday October 4, 2015 at Serenity Place in Lerona.

Born February 11, 1927 at Forest Hill, she was the daughter of the late Emmett E. and Rose Cottle Lilly. She grew up in Forest Hill, WV and was a 1945 graduate of Forest Hill High School.

Preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Minter Buckland, and three brothers and five sisters.

Viola was a member of Forest Hill United Methodist Church where her beautiful alto voice filled the air. She also attended Fairview Baptist Church at Forest Hill. A caring, wife, mother and grandmother to her family, she was a light guiding them along life’s path. She surrounded them with love, comfort, warmth and food that touched their souls. In addition to singing and cooking, Viola also enjoyed playing the piano, gardening, ceramics, making apple butter and molasses and spending time with her family. Viola was a devoted employee of the Summers County Board of Education for 19 years, where she touched the hearts and lives of many children and adults with her caring nature and savory foods. She also worked summers at the Bluestone Conference Center and Camp Summers. Every time a piano key is stroked, and a hymn note is raised, Viola’s sweet presence will be felt by all.
