True Republican, 3 March 1944

Mrs. Carl F. Hoffman, a life long resident here, and highly respected in the community, passed from this life on Tuesday afternoon at 5:15 o'clock at her home on Washington Place. She had been in ailing health for an extended period and seriously ill, following a paralytic stroke suffered this past week. Some ten years ago Mrs. Hoffman had a severe attack of the flu, which undermined her health and from which she never full recovered. Despite her years of ill health, she remained so patient through it all.

Alice Austin was born in Sycamore August 18, 1875, the daughter of William Austin and Margaret Phelps. She received her education in the Sycamore schools and in 1901 was united in marriage to Carl F. Hoffman.

Mrs. Hoffman was endowed with the attributes of character which made her a loving and thoughtful wife and mother. She will be sadly missed in the home, where her main interest radiated. She will also be greatly missed in the community. Her life was one of service, not only to her family members, but to her friends and to anyone whom she could give assistance.

The decedent, in her earlier years, was an active member of the local Methodist church. She was also a member of the Sycamore Woman's Relief Corps and the Royal Neighbors.

Surviving to mourn her death are her husband, two daughters, Mrs. Paul (Violet) Stenstrom of Oak Park; Mrs. Bud (Edna) Foster, Sycamore; one son, Carl Hoffman Jr., Rockford; two sisters, Mrs. Robert J. Dennis, Sycamore and Miss Lilie Austin, Geneva; two brothers, Charles Austin, Chicago, and William Austin of Beloit; and eight grandchildren. A son, William, preceded her in death in 1932. Four sisters, Anna L., Mabel, Bertha and Margaret, also preceded her in death.

Funeral rites were accorded this Friday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock from the Kebil Funeral Home with the Rev. R. L. Ferris, pastor of the Calvary Baptist church officiating. Interment took place in the Elmwood cemetery.
