Penelope Edwards married in 1765, Col. William Pope. She was the daughter of Hayden (1716-1805) and Penelope Sanford Edwards (1723-1808), of Fauquier County, Va. Her father was a son of William and Mary Edwards of Lancaster or Westmoreland County, Va., and moved from Virginia to Bourbon County, Ky. around 1785 where he reared a large and wealthy family. Penelope Sanford, wife and cousin of Hayden Edwards, was a granddaughter of Sir Humphrey and Rebecca Walker Sanford. A brother of Penelope Edwards was John Edwards (1748-1837) who became U.S. Senator, 1792-95, when Kentucky became a commonwealth in 1792. Another brother, Lt.
