Maria Rau was born as the fourth known daughter out of 8 children to Heinrich Rau and Dorothea Ruth in the village of Calbach, Hesse, Germany. The village was a short distance away from the town of Hainchen, and Maria met Wilhelm Henrich. She immigrated with her parents and 3 siblings on the ship "America", arriving in New York City on November 7, 1864. Traveling with them was Wilhelm Henrich, her future husband. Living in Indiana Township, the couple had 11 children. The death certificate has 53 Amanda Street in Knoxville as the place of death, the form signed by daughter Annie Baumgartel. Cause of death was listed as valvular heart disease. She was 71 years, 9 months and 20 days of age. Buried on January 14th from the funeral home of John Slater in Mt. Oliver.
