William was a small boy when his father moved out of Lawrenceville, near Pittsburgh, to a farm near Dorseyville. He married Sophie Schuster, the sister of Katherine Schuster who married his brother John August. John bought his own farm in Hampton Township and William took over the home farm in Indiana Township at his father's death. But he apparently was not happy, for on December 22, 1913, he shot himself in the head, committing suicide. The death certificate mentions the property he died on as the Michael Claus farm. The Holzheimer & Bock Funeral Home of Sharpsburg arranged the funeral. His widow moved to Sharpsburg and married Phillip Christ.
