The family somehow managed to get to Bremen, Germany where they boarded the SS America and were assigned to the Steerage section of the ship. The ship sailed to England then, after a brief pause, sailed again for America. As with manyl ocean crossings, the seas were rough and the family's baby, 15-month-old Anton, died while enroute and was buried in the North Atlantic on 7 Sep 1864, just 6 days short of arriving at Castle Garden, New York City.
The family then gathered their 10 remaining children and set out for Iowa aboard railway boxcars. They settled first on a farm purchased northeast of St. Ansgar, Iowa before finally moving a short distance to a farm in Lyle Township, Mower County, Minnesota.
The Machacek Family still recalls the early losses of Josephine, Emanuel and Anton.
