Despite the losses of two of his children, Frank Machacek wanted to go to America to find land which he could not afford in Bohemia. With his wife, Katherine, and their 9 other children, they somehow found their way to Bremen, German where they boarded a steam ship fittingly named the America. A review of historic weather maps indicates the ship entered an area of strong seas caused by a hurricane. On Wednesday, September 7, 1864, the family lost baby Anton and would have wrapped him in linens and cast him upon the water for a burial.
It would be another six days before the America made landfall in what is now lower Manhattan in New York City. This was before the Statute of Liberty and Ellis Island were on the horizon. From there, the family somehow reached St. Ansgar, Iowa where Katherine Machacek had a brother to help them settle. In a few years, they moved just across the state line and into Minnesota where the family's hard work helped them to prosper and to live the American dream.
