Opal accepted Jesus Christ at a very young age and attended church regularly wherever she lived. She was a member of the Episcopal Church and later the Methodist Church.
She was born Dec. 11, 1914, in Tescott and was a Tescott High School alumna. In 1928 she graduated from Asbury Hospital Nursing School, Salina, as a registered nurse. She began as a nurse at a tuberculosis sanatorium in Norton, where she met and married Herb Howard. She treated injured solders during World War II at a hospital in Kansas City, Kan., and was a surgery room supervisor in North Platte, Neb. She was widowed there in 1961. She retired in 1976 as an emergency surgery room supervisor in Lorenzo, Texas. Shortly afterward, she was located by her high school sweetheart, Gordon “Red” Carroll. They married a year later and moved to Florence. Two years later they moved to Ottawa County State Lake, Bennington, to be close to family. Opal enjoyed gardening, fishing, traveling in their camper across the United States and being a member of a camping club. But her passion was being with family.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Herbert B. Howard, North Platte, Neb., and Gordon “Red” Carroll, Bennington.
There will be a Celebration of Life service held to honor Opal’s life at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, at Bennington Bible Church, 824 N. Nelson St., Bennington (across from Bennington Cemetery). Snacks, beverages and fellowship will follow after the service, at the church.
Memorials may be made to the Bennington Ambulance Service. Condolences: www.wilsonfamilyfuneral home.com.
