William Curtis Newberry was born 17 MAY 1834 in Richmond County, North Carolina to William A and Mary Curtis Newberry.
He married Jane Paralee Allman on 15 JAN 1856 in Stewart County, Tennessee. The next day they came to Weakley County and set up housekeeping in a one room log cabin. They moved to the log cabin using a wheelbarrow to carry their possessions. They did well and later built a large house in the 6th district (about where Johnnie Oliver lives (the Jess Highfill place)). William and Jane lived together for 59 years and had 9 children. Seven lived to be adults.
He was a farmer and a Cumberland Presbyterian preacher. He was called Parson Newberry. He was the first pastor of the New Hope Church. His grandson, Charles Curtis Brooks, was the last person to have his funeral at the chuch in 1957. The church sat empty for a long time and was torn down in 1982.
Parson wore a patch over one eye because he had one eye removed surgically to improve the vision in his other eye.
During the Civil War, he was opposed to the war and refused to fight. When the Union soldiers were near, he would hide in the fields. He later said he would never do that again, and advised his sons to fight if necessary.
He died 18 Jan 1925 in Weakley County, Tennessee
