Kate and her brothers Joseph and Francis, immigrated from Bohemia, The exactly location has not been discovered even with professional assistance. The parents, Mary (Maly) and Jozef Adamec stayed in the east for a while and then homesteaded a 40-acre farm in Monroe County, Wisconsin as early as 1856. Francis at age 16 enlisted in the Civil War and died of typhus in 1861 a few months later (Buried in Cave Hill Cemetery, Kentucky).

Catherine at age 17 was a housekeeper for and became a common law wife of Peter Maher in Wisconsin, legalizing their marriage later on 24 Feb 1857. In about 1868, the parents, Catherine and Peter Maher, and Joseph with his wife Margaret Linnihan made their way to the rich prairie land of in southern Minnesota. The Mahers with their son Thomas and daughter Mary homesteaded in Belgrade Twp. of Nicollet County. The older Adams parents lived in Mankato. 3 more children were born to the Mahers: Margaret, Joseph Edward and Peter James.

On Jan 1, 1988 Peter (1826-1888) died. That Spring, J. Edward left after the gensing was planted, never to be heard from again. When her son Thomas married Etta Ullom in 1904, Catherine, Margaret and Jame moved to North Mankato Village and Tom remained on the farm to raise their 4 daughters. Her daughter Mary had married John Biwer and they had one daughter Mellie. Thus, Catherine was grandmother to 5 girls. Catherine was 81 years old when she died, 32 years a widow.
