Springfield – Mary H. Turner, 64, died at Hospice Savannah on August 11, 2015, after a long struggle with cancer. Mary was born on March 4, 1951 in Martinsville, Virginia. She graduated with an Associate’s Degree from Saint Mary’s College in Raleigh, North Carolina. She later pursued a Bachelor of Education Degree and later a Master Degree of Education from the University of Tennessee. She taught in Tennessee as an elementary school teacher for a few years before relocating to Savannah, Georgia. She taught in Chatham County for two years before taking a teaching job in Effingham County. While in Effingham County she pursued an Education Specialist Degree from Georgia Southern University. She taught English Language Arts at Effingham High School before transferring to Effingham County Middle School where she retired after 31 years of service. She was a former member of the Springfield United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years. She later became an active member of the Jerusalem Lutheran Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles B. and Margaret B. Harper, and a brother, William (Bill) Harper. Visitation will be 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Jerusalem Lutheran Church. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery in Springfield, Georgia.
