Charles Blain Harper, Sr. age 90, formerly of Henry County, passed away Saturday Dec. 6, 2014, in Old Trail Assisted Living Hospice in Harrisonburg, Va.

He was born Sept. 17, 1924 in Henry County to the late Wade and Mamie Pelletier Harper. In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by his wife, Margaret Barker Harper; one son, William Saunders “Bill” Harper, and his three brothers, W.A., Leon, and Conrad Harper.

Mr. Harper was a WWII Veteran, and he served in the U.S. Army as a mortar operator in the European Theater of operation. He received a bronze service star for his accomplishments. He graduated from N.C. State University and went to work for Fieldcrest Mills and later associated with Sonoco and was employed by them for over thirty years. He was of the Methodist Faith.

He is survived by one son, Charles B. (Sue) Harper, Jr. of Charlottesville; three daughters, Charlotte Harper of Charlottesville, Meg Harper (Bruce Dane) of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Mary (Norman) Turner of Springfield, Ga.; five grandchildren, Audrey (James) Breda of Humble, Texas, Amy Turner of Springfield, Ga., Austin Hall of Charlottesville, Va., Matt Harper of Charlottesville, Va. and Paul Harper of Charlottesville, Va.; and one great-grandchild, Grayson Breda.

The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, December 10, 2014, at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Roselawn with Rev. Ron Mateer officiating the service. Interment will follow with military graveside rites by the Martinsville Henry County Veterans Honor Guard in the Roselawn Burial Park.
