Jess was the son of W.L. and Louisa C. (Gilliland) Reynolds, who were married August 19, 1884, in Appanoose County, Iowa.

Jess was first married to Merle Springer on April 7, 1912, in Exline, Iowa. The couple were later divorced.

Obituary From "Ottumwa Courier," December 5, 1953:

Jess W. Reynolds, 64, 330 ½ East Main street, died at 11:55 p.m. Friday at his home after two years illness.

Born April 1, 1889, at Griffensville, Iowa, he was the son of Lafe and Louisa Reynolds. A retired farmer and laborer, he was a member of the Benton Street Presbyterian church. He had lived the past 30 years in the Ottumwa community.

Surviving are his second wife, the former Isal McFadden, to whom he was married January 18, 1948; one son, D.J. Reynolds of Albia; two grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Birdie Way of Buckeye, Ariz., and Mrs. Ida Fenton of Allerton, and one brother, James Reynolds of Exline.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Community funeral home in charge of the Rev. Charles R. Lawrence, pastor of the Benton Street Presbyterian church. Burial will be in Shaul cemetery.
