Although he lived a long and very productive life, he left us far too soon. Peter was born April 13, 1937 in Salt Lake City to Peter Val and Ila Nielson Sundwall, the first of their three children. He thrived during a happy childhood in Murray, Utah, and was a distinguished athlete (selected to the "All State Football Team" the year Murray won the state championship in 1955), and went on to play football for BYU for two years prior to serving an honorable mission for the LDS Church in Norway. Upon returning from his mission, he completed his pre-med studies at the University of Utah and during this time met his beautiful, talented eternal sweetheart and companion, Connie Jean Affleck. He was admitted to the U of U School of Medicine, graduating with a medical degree in 1964. He did postgraduate studies at St. Louis University in Missouri and at the LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City.
Peter and Connie married in the Salt Lake Temple on September 9, 1960 and together they had seven children. Shortly after finishing his medical studies, Peter served as a Captain/Flight Surgeon in the U.S. Air Force. He chose to emulate his father, "Val" Sundwall, by being a general practitioner, a "family doctor", starting his professional career in Kanab, Utah, where he and Connie Jean raised their family for 10 years. He returned to Murray in 1981 to join his father's practice and worked there for the past 34 years providing comprehensive and compassionate care for thousands of patients over the years.
Peter was a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, having served as a Bishop in Kanab, and in various priesthood positions, most notably as the Stake Patriarch of the Murray South Stake since 2007. In recent years, he has been anxiously engaged in family history, temple work and his passion for gardening and spending time at the family cabin in Fairview, Utah. His greatest pleasure came from his family, whom he enthusiastically supported and loved with all his heart. His passing will leave a void in the lives of many individuals and families who have relied on him for professional care and spiritual support. Like his name implied, he was as a rock, a firm foundation in all things that matter most.
Peter was preceded in death by his parents, Val Sundwall (1984) and Ila Nielson Sundwall (2003); and his beloved son, Steven Sundwall. He is survived by his children: Anne Diehl (Rick), Peter Val (Michelle), Dan (Melissa), Becky Hersch (Oliver), Catherine, Michael (Ashlie), 18 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; his sister, Katherine Sundwall Carpenter; and brother, Dr. David Nielson Sundwall.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday, August 3, 2015, at 12 Noon at the Murray Utah South Stake Center, 5735 South Fashion Blvd. (300 East). A viewing will be Sunday evening from 5-8 p.m. at Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary, 4760 S. State Street, and Monday morning from 10:30-11:45 a.m. at the church prior to services. Interment: Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
