Funeral services for T.J. Hardy who died in Minneapolis Wednesday, June 1, 1938, were held at the Bradley funeral home in Cresco at 1:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon. The Rev. J.T. Dixon, pastor of the Foss Methodist church of Minneapolis, officiated. Burial was in the Kendallville cemetery. At the funeral service Mrs. E.H. Allen sang "Lead Kindly Light" and "Abide With Me," favorite hymns of the deceased. Mrs. Allen played her own piano accompaniment. Rev. Dixon read the following life sketch of Mr. Hardy:

Thomas Jefferson Hardy was a child of Wm. and Mary (Hunter) Hardy of Warren, Ohio, where he was born Nov. 25, 1853. He grew to manhood on a farm in Albion township, Howard county, Iowa. His early education was received in a country school house, since when (sic) his desire for knowledge has never waned. The old McGuffey reader was one of his most prized possessions.

Mr. Hardy was a pioneer in whose memory lived the trials of the Civil War and those of the reconstruction period. He was one of a family of nine children. Three sisters and one brother survive him. They are Mrs. Eliza Cole of Dell Rapids, S.D.; Mrs. Josephine Becker of Cresco, Iowa; Mrs. Margaret Yager of Wells, Minn.; and Wm. Hardy of Buffalo Springs, N.D.

On Sept. 26, 1880, he was united in marriage with Miss Elizabeth Webster of Kendallville. Together they raised a family of four children until a tragic sudden death on Aug. 20, 1898, broke up this happy partnership, leaving the full care of the family on Mr. Hardy's shoulders which he carried faithfully and lovingly, stimulated by the first love which never died.

One son, Elmer L., died Dec. 19, 1918. Surviving are Vernie C., of Cresco; Mrs. A.W. River of Riceville, Ia.; and Mrs, O.E. DeWitt of Minneapolis. There are three grandchildren: Mrs. H.L. McKee of Minneapolis; Dorothy Hatcher of Minneapolis and Walter River of Riceville. Also three great grandchildren: Robert and Thomas McKee and James Hatcher.

Mr. Hardy was a member of the Odd Fellows lodge and loved fellowship and the beautiful (sic) in whatever realm he found it. Philosophy, poetry, history, oratory and theology all came under his alert mind and this would be enriched by committing to memory choice literature, even to whole lectures of the famous Patrich Henry. He had a high standard of morals and credited it all to the invaluable influence of a Godly mother.

Having reached the ripe old age of 84 years it is not surprising that his body began to feel the strain. For a month past all that medical skill could do was offered, but he succumbed on June 1, 1938.

Relatives and friends from a distance attending the funeral were Mrs. O.E. DeWitt and daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Hatcher and Mr. and Mrs. H.L. McKee of Minneapolis; Mrs. and Mrs. A.W. River and son Walter of Riceville; Mrs. T.H. Jones and Miss Hattie Webster of St. Paul; Mrs. Margaret Yager of Wells, Minn.; Mrs. Robert Wilkes of Riceville; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Lemon and daughter Ellen of Lime Springs; Mrs. A. Ritchie of Riceville; J. Eisansee of Minneapolis; and Mr. and Mrs. Chase and Fred Todd of near Kendallville.
