Ross Wayne Hickok, 78, passed away quietly at home June 21, surrounded by his family. He was born in Northern Minn., on May 28, 1928 to Otto and Bertha Hickok. They moved to Leroy, Minn., where he attended school thru the eighth grade. At age thirteen he left home to work on a dairy farm in Montfort, Wisc. While working on the farm he completed two years of high school.
In 1943, he moved to Hot Springs, and worked on a dairy ranch until 1945 when he joined the U.S. Navy, serving a year in the Philippines. He was honorably discharged in 1946. In January 1947, he joined the U.S. Army with tours in Okinawa, Japan, and Korea with the 1st Calvary Division, Eighth Combat Engineer Squadron. He was honorably discharged October 1949.
Returning to Hot Springs, he was employed by the U.S. Soil Conservation Service as a heavy equipment operator. Ross married Merilyn Perreault July 21, 1951. In 1953 he moved with his family to El Paso, Texas.
He retired as Superintendent of Streets for the city of El Paso after 32 years. He also served with the U.S. Naval Reserve assigned to the 61st Seabee Battalion as a Chief Petty Officer and instructor from 1954 thru 1958.
He is survived by his wife, Merilyn; two daughters, Ellen Rae Proctor and Virginia Gail McNicol (John); two grandchildren, Gary A. Proctor and Chelsie L. McNicol, all of El Paso, one brother, Paul (Doris) of Ore., sisters in-law, Jane Hickok of Vinegrove, Ky., and Lola Cavender, brother-in-law, Darrel Cavender of Anchorage, Alaska, and twenty nieces and nephews and their families.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Fred and Arno.
Graveside services and interment with military honors were held at Fort Bliss National Cemetery on June 26.
