Boniface J. "BJ" Mayer, long time resident of Naperville, passed away Sunday, July 19, 2015 at Tabor Hills Healthcare Center located in Naperville, DuPage County, Illinois. He was born December 15, 1921 in Metamora, IL. He was married to Helen (nee Vala) for 67 years.

BJ was a veteran of WWII where he piloted a P-51 named Cheesecake Chassis, in China, Burma, and India. BJ and his plane have a special honor at the Smithsonian. He maintained his membership to the CBI organization during his lifetime. After WWII he flew for the Illinois Air National Guard Peoria until he received his job with American Airlines.

BJ retired from American Airlines after 28 years as a commercial pilot. Over his long career, he flew DC-3's to retiring his career flying the DC-10. Flying and talking about flying was his passion.

BJ also loved talking with his children and friends about hunting, fishing and cars. After retiring from American Airlines, BJ continued flying as a charter pilot for the Nomads, flying out of Detroit and charters from Clow International Airport. BJ and Helen traveled the world with the Nomads to places such as Africa, South America, Ireland, Europe and the Islands. As the charter captain, he was the final word as to timing, takeoffs and schedules.

BJ is survived by his wife Helen, six children Max (Jane), Betty (Ek) Uswajesdakul, Mike (Jen), Jeff (Jena), Jerry, Mark (Kelly) Mayer, 17 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents Max and Anna (nee Vogel) Mayer and by a sister and brother-in-law Shirley Ann (John) Davison.

Visitation Wednesday, July 22 from 4-7 p.m. at the Beidelman-Kunsch Funeral Homes & Crematory, 516 S. Washington St., Naperville, IL.

Military Honors will be performed Thursday, 11:00 a.m. at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood, IL.
