Howard was one of five sons and a daughter born to Humphrey J. Gifford and Hellen Mariah Wyckoff of Greenwich, Huron County, Ohio. Before 1900, Howard left Ohio for the big city, joining the NYC Police Department on 14 February 1900. About 1903, he married Lillian Widmayer, daughter of John Widmayer and Mary Abel of New York City. They had one child, Francis W. Gifford (1914-1977). Lillian was born 14 November 1876 and died 24 December 1932.
After their marriage, Anna and Howard made their home in Savannah, tending their gardens, enjoying the quiet of village life, and entertaining friends and family in the area.
Howard Wyckoff Gifford passed away on 28 September 1962, 35 days after Anna.
