She was born July 10, 1924 in Dorcas, WV and was a daughter of the late Edward and Virginia (Crites) Vance.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Carl J. Thorne on July 14, 201l; eight brothers, Wilbur Vance, Tom Vance, Jake Vance, Fred Vance, Bill Vance, Jim Vance, John Vance and Glen "Hart" Vance Sr.; six sisters, Grace Sites, Elsie Sites, Ruth Whetzel, Goldie Huffman, Rose Thorne and Ethel Hines; one grandson, Mitch Earle;
Lena and her husband, Carl had been owner and operator of Golden Lanes Bowling Alley in Petersburg since 1973.
She was a faithful member of the Brake Church of the Brethren.
She was known for her "homemade cooking and especially her pies" at the Bowling Alley.
Mrs. Thorne is survived by two sons, C. Delmas Thorne and wife Shirley of Woodbridge, VA and Randy W. Thorne and wife Dianne of Petersburg, WV; one daughter, Sue Earle and husband Willard of Petersburg, WV; seven grandchildren, Kassie Genovere, Terry Thorne, Heather Cox, Erica Thorne, Sarah Metheny, Derek Thorne and Willard “Boog” Earle and thirteen great-grandchildren.
Family will receive friends Monday 2-4 and 6–8 p.m. at the Schaeffer Funeral Home.
Funeral service will be held Tuesday, July 7, 2015 at 2 p.m. at the Brake Church of the Brethren with Pastor Craig Howard officiating.
Interment will follow in the Brake Cemetery at Dorcas, WV.
Memorial donations may be made in memory of Lena Thorne to the Brake Church of the Brethren Outreach Fund or Ginger Alt Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 831, Petersburg, WV.
