J. B. Bowling was born March 5 1849, in Rock Island County Ill., died at his home in Scandia Township, Republic County, Kansas, Wednesday March 22, 1916, at the age of 67 years 2 weeks. 3 days, after a severe illness of less than two weeks. He was married in 1847 to Agnes Berry. Two children were born to this union. Both children, and mother, preceded him to the Better Land. In 1896 he was married to Miss Celia Ainsworth. To this union four children were born. Rose, Harold, Marie and Pansy. All were at home at the time of his death.
Brother Bowling is survived by his wife, four children, one sister, Mrs. I. N. Voorhies of this county. His brother James P. Bowling, a half-brother, Clark Bowling of Delaven Kans., a half-sister in Campbell Neb. and ine in Wheatland, Wyoming Brother Bowling was a member of a highly respected family. He served as County Commissioner two years and served in many positions of trust. He was a member of the M. E. church at Providence Chapel for 23 years. He gave the land for the church and always felt a deep interest in the church before he became a member. He was a member of the Scandia I. O. O. F. and also an honorary member of the Rydal W. C. T. U. which organization attended the funeral in a body. He was a firm believer in the Temperance cause and never failed to promote the cause when opportunity presented itself. He was kindhearted and unselfish. Loved by everyone who knew him. The funeral service was held at Providence Chapel, Friday March 24, Conducted by his pastor Rev. G. L. Rarick assisted by Rev. W. A. Van Gundy of Scottsville, Kas. and Rev. B.. F. Henry of the Scandia U. B. Church. At th close of the service at the church the I. O. O. F. of Scandia took charge at the grave. The Methodist Quartet of Scandia rendered beautiful selections, both in the home and church and at the grave. The floral offerings were very elaborate and greatly appreciated. Rev. G. L. Rarick.
