Israel Gregg Bowling was born in Rock Island County, IL to Samuel and Margaret McDonald Bowling. His mother died when he was 19 months old. His father
remarried Lydia Elbright Mahaffey, and she became the only mother he knew.
He had four older brothers and a sister. They were: George Davenport Bowling, John Brady, Arzilla Ann, Mary Druzilla, Jeremiah L, James P and younger brother William Winfield, who in infancy.
His fathers marriage added step brothers and sisters, Sarah Ann Mahaffey, George Mahaffey and Edward Mahaffey. Samuel and Lydia had the following children: Clark Donelson, Margaret Elizabeth, Barbara Ellen, and Lucy Amanda.
Samuels father and new wife moved their family from Rock Island to Henry County, Illinois. Gregg grew to adulthood there. He met Mary Henrietta Laub, who lived a few miles from the Bowling farm. Mary was the youngest child of Johann Phillip and Anna Maria Graf Laub. She had 10 brothers and two sisters. Her father died in 1880, and she and her mother, Anna, moved to Nebraska to be closer to brothers who had moved to Merrick County, NE.
After a while Gregg moved to Nebraska and he and Mary were married in Merrick County, Nebraska in 1881. They moved to Republic County, Kansas in 1884. Gregg
purchased 160 acres from Daniel Young, who had homesteaded it several years before. It was the southeast quarter section located three miles east and one and one half miles north of the village of Norway in Norway Township. Mr. Bowling lived there until his death in 1913.
Gregg was a prosperous farmer and well liked by those who knew him. Gregg was elected county commissioner at the general election the year before his death. He had to resign because of a lingering illness.
