"Gladys T. Hartman, 94, formerly of Enola and Vero Beach, FL, passed away Monday, October 31, 2011 at the Colonial Park Care Center, Harrisburg.
Born on May 10, 1917 in West Hemlock Township, Montour County, she was the daughter of the late John W. and Harriet L. (Kitchen) Ande. She graduated from Bloomsburg High School, Class of 1934. She was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Columbia Hill, Danville and a life member of Lake Clarke Rescue, Inc., Wrightsville.
Gladys was a waitress at the Clearview Diner and the Midway Diner, a job she truly loved because she could talk to people. She also managed the Royalton Diner and owned the Hershey Ice Cream Store in Mt. Joy. Gladys also worked at New Standard in Mount Joy and Hamilton Watch in East Petersburg.
Gladys traveled the world, taking her first flight to Puerto Rico in 1967. She also visited Iceland, Bermuda, Bahamas and Sweden. She traveled extensively in the United States visiting family and friends.
To her grandchildren, she was "Nana." She was full of life and always on the go when her health would allow. She had a sense of adventure, great stories, a big smile and a love for playing cards. Nana always provided unconditional love and encouragement.
Even though Gladys had experienced a great deal of loss over the years, her faith in God never wavered. Her late fiancé, Marin Ripson, was by her side every day in recent years until his passing.
She is survived by son, Thomas Kear of E. Stroudsburg; daughter, Kay Walker-Higgins of Shamokin; son, Michael Kear of Hummels-town; daughter-in-law, Peggy Kear, widow of son Ronald Kear of Harrisburg; stepson, Dale Hartman of Camp Hill; stepdaughter, Barbara Johnson of Mt. Joy; one great, great granddaughter, ten great grandchildren, nine grandchildren and sister, Lois Wintersteen of Bloomsburg.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 5th, in the St. Peter's Lutheran Church, 726 Columbia Hill Road, Columbia Hill, Danville, PA. A viewing will be held in the church one hour before the service. Burial service will be held in the church cemetery immediately following funeral service.
Instead of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to her church, St. Peter's Lutheran Church, or your local Hospice. Myers-Harner Funeral Home, 1903 Market St., Camp Hill is handling funeral arrangements."
