Lois B. Wintersteen, age 101, a resident of her home in Bloomsburg for more than 50 years, died on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 4, 2014, a patient in the Geisinger-Bloomsburg Hospital.

Lois was born on Wednesday, March 27, 1912, in West Hemlock Township, a daughter of the late John W. and Harriet (Kitchen) Ande. Throughout her younger years, Lois attended the Sheeps one-room schoolhouse in West Hemlock Township.

In April 1930, Lois married her loving husband, Harvey A. Wintersteen. She was a devoted member of the St. John Lutheran Church in Espy. Lois dedicated her life and time to caring for her husband and family. When time allowed, she enjoyed crocheting, cooking and spending time with friends and family.

In 1974, Lois was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 44 years: Harvey A. Wintersteen; and also by a daughter: Evelyn Sorber, in 1996. She was also preceded by five sisters: Bessie Kinney, Edna Arnwine, Myrtle Pursel, Sara Hartline and Gladys Hartman, and also by a brother: Shuman Ande.

Survivors include a son: James A. Wintersteen and wife, Patricia J.., of Bloomsburg; a son-in-law: Kenneth Sorber of Bloomsburg; six grandchildren: James R. Wintersteen and wife, Patricia A.; Linda J. Nichols and husband, Dennis; Eric J. Wintersteen and wife, Tammy; Timothy Sorber and wife, Jayne; Thomas Sorber and wife, Lori; and Todd Sorber and wife, Lisa; 15 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. Lois was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday morning, Jan. 18, at 11 a.m. from St. John Lutheran Church, 2575 Old Berwick Road, Bloomsburg, with her pastor, the Rev. Gordon E. Smith, officiating. Lois will be laid to rest in the Columbia Hill Cemetery in West Hemlock Township.
