Joseph Matthew Blickhan, 87, of 2012 Spring, died at 2:38 a.m. Thursday (June 3, 2004) in Blessing Skilled Nursing Unit, Sixth Floor. He was born Feb. 14, 1917, in Quincy, a son of Matthew and Clara Wolf Blickhan. He first married Lucille Gramke in 1949. She died in 1985. He later married Mary Spicer Monckton in 1988. She survives.
He worked for the Gardner Denver Co. from 1946 until 1979. Mr. Blickhan entered military service in August of 1941. He served on active duty in the South Pacific under General MacArthur 1942-45. Mr. Blickhan was an Elite Ranger for the U.S. Army, 40th Division, 108th Infantry, Company M. While serving he made five beach landings: Guadalcanal, Luzon, Leyta, New Britain and Panay. He was a member of AMVETS, the VFW and the American Legion. Mr. Blickhan was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church and was very active in the parish. He was a member of the Holy Name Society of the church and was Man of the Year of the parish in 1984. He served as a communion minister and lector at St. Francis for many years. He also took communion to shut-ins for numerous years. He served on the St. Francis Parish Board. He was supervisor of maintenance for St. Francis 1979-1988, during which time he took care of St. Francis parish buildings. He was also a member of the Secular Franciscans and was a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus. Mr. Blickhan was also very active in Quincy Notre Dame, the Boy Scouts, Quincy University, the Quincy University Foundation and the Mart Heinen Club.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, three brothers, one sister, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife; his parents; and six siblings, Mary, Elsie, Hilda, Delbert, Howard and a sister in infancy.
