Cornelius - Richard E. V. Smith of Cornelius (Pumpkin Ridge) died Thursday at a Hillsboro care center. He was 83.

"Funeral services were Monday at Sunset Chapel of Donelson, Sewell & Matthews Mortuary, with the Rev. Brad Whited officiating. A cremation followed.

Mr. Smith was born September 24, 1898, in Winifield, Kansas; the child of Dr. and Mrs. Daniel (Frances) Plummer Smith. He married Esther Graham in Kansas, June 14, 1924, and had lived in Cornelius 42 years.

"A member of the North Plains Knights of Pythias Lodge, Mr. Smith was a strawberry farmer and prospector. "

Survivors include his wife: sons, Richard and Charles, both of Hillsboro, and Wayne of Lebanon, Oregon; Daughters Mrs. Roy (Lorraine) Hagen of Columbia City, Oregon. Lois Howard and Mrs. Bill (Dolly) Johnson, both of Hillsboro, Mrs. Al (Dorothy) Lamont of Norwalk, California, Mrs. Don (Wilma) Freeman and Betty Knoke, both of Cornelius, and Mrs. Ron (Allene) Coleman of Bethel Island, California; brother Raymond H. of Seattle; Sisters, M. Agnes Deffenbaugh of Portland and Sarah Jane Lambert of San Jose, California, 45 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
