MUNCIE - Janice Fay (Matthews) Garrison continued her amazing and wonderful journey with God on Sunday, May 24, 2015. Filled with light and love, she eagerly went on her 'next great adventure' at peace and filled with hope for what was to come.

A beautifully spiritual woman, Janice (a licensed Unity Teacher and a member of the Unity Church in Anderson) will be remembered by her family as fearlessly unique and fabulously stylish - practicing yoga before it was trendy and teaching her granddaughters that you can never have too much leopard print or lipstick. She loved big hats, bold jewelry and all things that sparkle.

She loved her family dearly. Janice made everyone in her presence feel special and loved. Fiercely supportive and cheerfully confident in each person's pursuits, she made her children and grandchildren believe they could do anything.

She was born in Fentress County, Tennessee in 1935 to Mary and Fount Lackey. The family moved to Muncie when was she a child and she recently recalled that that they must have looked the Beverly Hillbillies as they arrived packed in and piled high with belongings and people. "I imagine we were quite the sight," she said.

But the Lackey family settled in nicely. Janice attended Selma High School and attended some classes Ball State University while raising her family with husband, Gene. In recalling her life with her grandchildren recently, she said that, to this day, Gene was the most handsome man she'd ever seen. They met when she was 12 and he was 15. 'He was the love of my life,' she said.

She said her sons were her angels and her grandchildren her light and hope. The family would say she was their light and she will be dearly missed by sons, Donald E. Matthews, Jr. (wife, Judy) and Robert A. Matthews, (wife, Teresa); sisters, Reatha Bell, Barbara Kemp and Nella Lowery; grandchildren, Brandy Matthews (husband, Geoff), Andy Matthews (Linda Anguiano), Margot Dwyer (husband, Jon), Courtney Matthews, Jordan Matthews, Jennifer Oliver (husband, Jason), Betsy Meyer (husband, Chad) and Charlie Richman (wife, Nicole); and 13 great- grandchildren. Also survived by special friend and companion, Don 'Sug' Wilburn.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mary and Fount Lackey; husbands, Donald E. Matthews, Sr.; William R. Shirey, Jr. and Floyd 'Max' Garrison; a son, Michel F. Matthews; and siblings, Paul Lackey, Clarence Lackey, Odell Lackey, Harry Lackey, Pearl Brooks, Ruby Swinhart and Dorothy Pailie.

And so, she drives off into the sunset to her 'happy place' in her big yellow Cadillac, Buttercup, blaring Roger Miller… "Kansas City Star, that's what I are..."

There will not be services per her request.
