Jackson was made Captain of this Volunteer Company (Company A, 24 Regiment, Tn Volunteers, CSA), and his cousin, Francis Jackson, became 1st Lieutenant." After John C. Jackson was wounded and resigned, Francis Jackson III succeeded him as Captain. It is reported that he was also wounded at some point in the line of duty, but was not required to leave the Company."
After the war, "Francis Jackson III did the best he could to resume the peaceful pursuits of citizenship at his boyhood home. He became devoted to farming, raising livestock, and community affairs such as improvement to the Longview Pike and area schools. His family's interests remained first during his entire life."
Frances Jackson married Sue Adelaide Covington on 20 Feb 1872 in Rutherford Co., Tn. They had no children. Much later, he married Rachael Anna George of Lincoln Co., Tn on 29 Dec 1886. They were the parents of five children:

- Grover Cleveland
- Richard Fowler
- Annie Carmine
Carmine Jackson concludes, "During the sixty-second year of his life, Francis Jackson III was stricken ill for five months, during which time he faced the inevitable with complete composure. He gave full directions concerning his family, his business, and his burial. Death came on 25 April 1901. He lies buried across Versallies Road in front of his boyhood home."
