MERRITT C. THORNBURG

Merritt C. Thornburg, 74, 525 N. Franklin St., died today, May 12, at 3 a.m., at the Heritage House Nursing Home.

Mr. Thornburg had lived in Decatur County most of his life, where he was born March 25, 1910, in the Liberty Church neighborhood, the son of James Calvin and Alma Wright Thornburg. His father died April 5, 1976 [1947], and his mother died April 15, 1976 [1975]. he graduated from Purdue University in 1932, was in ROTC, and went on to serve in World War II.

He taught school in Shelby, Decatur and Rush counties,and was an active farmer. He wrote several books of note on farming and Indiana history. he also taught a veteran's educational class at Sandcreek. He was known for his "Men's Breakfasts" at the First Christian Church, and also for the many meals prepared at the Masonic Lodge.

He was a member of the First Christian Church, where he was teacher of the sixth grade Sunday School class over 35 years, and also a past deacon and elder. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, where he was a Past Master, the York Rite, where he was a past state chaplain, and of the Lois Chapter No. 147 OES, where he was a Past Worthy Patron. He was a member of the Decatur County Historical Society, where he had served as president. He was a member of the American Breeders' Association and several other agricultural organizations throughout the state, and of the Retired Teachers. He was in charge of the rabbit show at the Indiana State Fair and also the 4-H State Committee on Rabbits.

he was married to Clara Pearce May 11, 1935, in Indianapolis, and she preceded him in death Feb. 8, 1976. He is survived by three daughters: Mrs. Marilyn Gronau Greensburg, Mrs. Ward (Carolyn) Sparks, Indian Harbor Beach, Fla., and Mrs. Sally Wright, Chicago, Ill.; one son: Ted C. Thornburg, Greensburg; four grandchildren: Gretchen Gronau, Greensburg, Tara Sparks, Florida, and Kirk and Kim Thornburg, Greensburg, and one sister, Mrs. Robert (Mary Ruth) Richardson, R.R.8, Greensburg.

The services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dr. Michael Thiel officiating, and with burial in the South Park Cemetery. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Sunday. There will be a Masonic service at 7 p.m. and an OES service at 7:30 p.m. The family suggests that memorials be in the form of donations to the favorite charity of the donor.
