The Death of Mrs. Roy W. Ponder
Mrs. Roy W. Ponder, wife of our efficient and popular tax collector, died last
Sunday about noon. Mrs. Ponder was in the prime of life and apparently in
excellent health until less than a week before her death.
Mrs. Ponder's death is a peculiarly sad one owing to her being taken away in
the prime of life and leaving three small children, a husband, father and
mother and several brothers and sisters to mourn her loss. She was reared in
what is now Grady county, and lived in a few miles of Cairo all her life, until
her husband was elected to the office of tax collector, when they moved to town
and have lived here since.
Wherever Mrs. Ponder has lived, by her quiet and unassuming way and her simple
and sincere devotion to duty, has won her the admiration and respect of all
those who were fortunate enough to knew her well. She was a devoted Christian,
having in her early life joined the Methodist church, and ever since her
connection with the church led a consecrated Christian life.
The funeral services were conducted at the Methodist church in Cairo on Monday
last by Reverends Jones, Wight and Pafford in the presence of a large and
sympathetic audience. Rev. N. T. Pafford, her pastor, delivered an able,
appropriate and touching talk on the Christian character of Mrs. Ponder, after
which the remains were interred in the Cairo cemetery.
The Messenger and the many other friends in Cairo and Grady county, extend to
the family their sincere sympathies and commend them for comfort to Him "who
doeth all things well" and pray that He "who taketh notice of the little
sparrows that fall from the trees" may be a mother to the little children and a
comforter and guider to the husband, father, mother and other relatives of the
deceased.
