COLUMBIA - Services for Lois Deer Smith, 92, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with the Rev. C. Ron Beard, a close family friend, officiating. Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. in Fairfax Cemetery, Fairfax. The family will receive friends from 6-8 tonight, September 18, 2002, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Heartland Hospice Services, Inc., 1175 Sunset Boulevard, West Columbia, SC 29169.
Mrs. Smith, widow of D. Kenneth Smith, died at home September 16, 2002. Born in Fairfax, she was the daughter of the late Otis B. and Viola Deer. She was a graduate of Bethel Woman's College in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. She was co-owner of Smith Hardware and Paint Company in Columbia, where she had kept the books for more than 50 years. She was a member of Bellinger Chapel Methodist Church in Fairfax prior to moving her membership to Shandon United Methodist Church in Columbia.
Surviving are sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry (Betsy) Smith of Columbia, David (Lyn) Smith of Aiken, Randy Smith of Columbia; brother and sisters-in-law, Vivian (Eula Lee) Deer of Millen, Ga., Susie (Mrs. Otis) Deer of Hickory, N.C.; sister and brother-in-law, Mary Alice (Charlie) Miley of Brunson; grandchildren, Meg Smith Brooks, Lane Smith and Jay Smith, all of Columbia, Susie Sligh of Athens, Ga.; two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by brother, Otis B. Deer, and sister, Viola Deer.
