Edward "Eddie" Garrity was the son of Edward I. and Margaret O'Malley Garrity. Siblings were Anna (W. Hardie), John, Patrick (Ellen O'Connor), Mary (Lewis Alfred Adams), Michael (Anna), Ellen (T. Meyers), Margaret (D. Meyers), and Delia (Elmer S. "Pete" Shannon). The family was raised near Jamaica in Guthrie County, Iowa. Eddie was killed by a train at age 17.

Edward I. Garrity was born May 1828 in Oughaval Parrish, Westport, County Mayo, Ireland. He emigrated to the U.S. through Canada around 1845 and initially settled in Vermont. Either on the ship over, or after arrival he met and later married 17 year old Margaret O'Malley, who also came to America through Canada with her family in 1945. To that union 10 children were born; Ann (Wm. Hardy), John, Patrick (Ellen O'Connor), Mary (Lewis Alfred Adams), Michael (Anna O'Neal ), Ellen (J. Myers), Edward Jr. "Eddie", Margaret (B. Myers), Delia (Elmer S. "Pete" Shannon). and Thomas. Edward and Margaret also adopted a son off the Orphan Train from New York, Joseph Reynard (Margaret Burnette Liston). Edward and Margaret were farmers and raised their family in Dallas County, Iowa near the town of Bouton. Margaret is buried in St. Mary's Cemetery north of Jamaica.
