Bertha Florence Wright Davis
Birth 7 Aug 1882 in Warren Co., Tennessee
Death 1 Mar. 1915 in Lorain, Lorain, Ohio

Bertha Florence Wright Davis was born on August 7, 1882, in McMinnville, Warren County, Tennessee to Flora Ann Herndon, age 28, and William Thomas Wright, age 33. Bertha Florence married Rucker E Davis on 25 June 1898 in Erie County, Ohio. They had six children in 14 years. Bertha Florence died from complications of child birth on March 1, 1915, in Lorain, Ohio, at the age of 32, and was buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Lorain County, Ohio in Potter's Field, Grave # #37--without a headstone(Findagrave volunteer told me about her grave). By the manner of her burial, the family was very impoverished at that time which caused the family to break apart, three of the daughters, Flora, Ada Myrtle and Nettie were put in an institution for the feeble-minded in Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio (info came from 1920 census). Son William W. "Willie" age 13 was placed in a boys home, Glenwood Manual Training School for Boys located in Bloom Township, Cook County, Illinois. Do not know where daughter Helen Hazel Davis was placed; cannot find her in the 1920 census. The baby boy was adopted by Rucker E. Davis' sister Maggie Emerson Davis Darrow and her husband Merton Lee Darrow. They named the baby, Orla Lee Darrow; he died 21 April 1969 in Sandusky, Erie, Ohio. Do not know how long the children had to stay in the institutions but by 1930 census most of them were in Chicago, Illinois.
