Melba Eileen Strecker, resident of Salina, daughter of Pete and Freda (Schwartzkopf) Karst, was born July 20, 1928, in rural Barton County. She attended grade school at District 43, Galatia, and graduated from Hoisington High School in 1946. She attended summer classes at Fort Hays State Teachers College in Hays, and earned an emergency teaching certificate. She taught 2 years at the Bender Hill District 24 School.
She married Melvin Strecker on May 2, 1948, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Milberger. After her marriage to Melvin, she moved to live with him in Sylvan Grove. Melba became a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Sylvan Grove and was a member for 32 years. She became a charter member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church and served on the Altar Guild, the church council and was a member of Gloria Dei WELCA.

She was an avid flower gardener and also had a large vegetable garden. She continued the tradition of her mother by piecing and hand quilting quilts for her children and grandchildren. She also did hand quilting for several years for an instructor of quilting in Florida. She proudly displayed pictures of the quilts she had done over the years that had earned prizes at fairs.

In 2003, Melba moved to Johnstown Towers in Salina and later transferred her membership from Gloria Dei to Redeemer Lutheran.
