Sarah Waltz was born in Allegheny County, Maryland in 1804 to John Waltz (born ~1765 in Berks County, Pennsylvania, died ~1850 Allegheny County, Maryland) and Mary Margaret Hausen/Hauser (died ~1850 Allegheny, Maryland). Sarah's older brother, George R Waltz who is also buried in Waltz Cemetery, generously donated this land to the United Brethren Church for use as a church and cemetery.
Sarah's grandfather, John (Johannes) Reinhart Waltz had emigrated from Canton Berne, Switzerland to America aboard the ship "Phoenix". He arrived 20 October, 1744 and settled in Eastern Pennsylvania. From the "Waltz Family History & Genealogical Record" - 1884 {Broderbund WFT Vol. 5, ED. 1, Tree #3755. Date of Import: Feb 23, 1998}. John Reinhart Waltz's will was dated Sept. 17, 1782, in Berks County, Pennsylvania. Before Sarah's grandfather immigrated to Pennsylvania, Sarah's great grandfather, "Frederick Reinhart Waltz (Woltz) became a martyr to the cause of civil and religious liberty, for which hewas banished from his native Swiss home, in the Alpine range, to the wilds of America, in the year 1731. From the "Waltz Family History & Genealogical Record" - 1884
Frederick Reinhart Waltz sold his body, (as an indentured servant,) to pay for his passage across the sea. He was required to labor for 18 months to redeem his freedom. There was no information about his wife, but it is believed that he had at least 4 sons. Frederick Reinhart Waltz's will is dated 1782, from Frederick County, Maryland. [In contrast, according to a biographical sketch of Sarah's nephew, George W. Waltz, from the book "History of Medina County and Ohio" published in 1881, Sarah's father, John Waltz was from Germany, and not Pennsylvania.] Sarah's husband, Jacob Miller, was also born in Maryland. “. . . Jacob and Sarah Miller . . .were married in Maryland but removed to Ohio in an early day. [Jacob’s father,] Abraham Miller, was one of the pioneers of the Buckeye State. He was the father of 5 children, 3 sons, and 2 daughters—Jacob, John, Phillip, Polly, and Sally, all of whom settled in Medina County. All are now deceased, and though Jacob was the eldest of the family, he outlived the other members. With one exception all died in Medina County.
Jacob Miller was a carpenter and joiner by trade but in connection with that occupation followed farming for many years. In the midst of a heavy timbered region in Medina County, Ohio, he developed an excellent farm, which, as the county round about was more thickly settled, became valuable land. In politics he was Democrat, and in religious belief was a member of the United Brethren Church. He was twice married, his first union being with [Sarah Waltz]. Their family numbered seven children, five of whom are yet living: John P., a merchant of Medina, Ohio; George E., a farmer of Medina County; David A.J., who is also engaged in farming in LaFayette Township, Medina County; Jacob A., who served in the One hundred and Sixty-sixth Ohio infantry and died in the service at Washington Heights; Peter, [a grain dealer of Mitchellville, Iowa and former 1st Lieutenant in Company B, 42nd Ohio Infantry under Col. James A. Garfield]; Margaret J., the wife of George O. Adams, a grocer and resident of Michigan, and P.L., the deceased wife of C.C. Bowman, of Michigan. The mother of this family died in Medina County, in 1842, after which Mr. Miller wedded Mrs. Elizabeth Dobson nee Lance, by whom he had four children: James F., a farmer of York Township, Medina County; Almeda, wife of Orval Nichols, a baker of Medina, Ohio; Ella E., who makes her home with her mother, and Estella, the wife of Walter Bowman of Medina..."
