Grimes County's first tragic plane crash occurred last Thursday afternoon when James P. Barry, 23, of 1663 St. Jane Avenue was killed near Iola in the crash of a T-33 jet training plane. Cadet Barry was the eighth crash victim from Bryan Air Force Base. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. James P. Barry of the above address. He was scheduled to graduate in October with class 52-G. It is reported that the plane crashed and burned on the J.C. Howard farm near State Highway 39 about 6 miles south of Iola. Falling in a corn field, wreckage was spread over a wide area. The crash occurred about 2:30 pm.
An Air Force spokesman said the plane apparently was flying low and the cadet soloing in the jet, had no chance to bail out. Exact cause of the crash has not been determined.
