1860 US Census, Berkshire, Delaware County, OH, lists Hatsel Ranney, age 49, born in CT, as a carpenter; his wife, Catherine, age 41, born in OH; Emma, age 11; Sarah, age 7; Dwight, age 4; Frelinghousen, age 3 months; and Kate, age 2. All children were born in OH. Also residing with them is Samuel Reinhard, age 37, a wagon maker; and Nancy Hoover, age 21. Residing near them is Jacob and Catherine Borror, age of both 39, with their 7 children.

In 1862, Hatsel Ranney is listed as a prison guard in the 1862 Columbus Dispatch.
