Funeral services for Hugo Kraft, Jr., 68, of the Woodrow Community near Brazos Bend State Park, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, at the First English Lutheran Church in Damon, with interment following at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Rosenberg. The Rev. Ken Ribe will officiate the services. Pallbearers are Charles Seiler, Ernie Mahlmann, Bruce Mahlmann, Sam Urso, Paul Urso, and Jimmy Charanza. Honorary pallbearers are Albert Dale Jonas and Russell Jonas. Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10, and from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, at Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Home, 3900 B.F. Terry Boulevard, FM 2218 and Highway 59, in Rosenberg. He will lie in state at the First English Lutheran Church in Damon for viewing at noon prior to the time of service on Saturday. The family will receive friends for visitation at Davis Funeral Home in Rosenberg from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10.

Hugo Jr. was born Dec. 20, 1930 in the Woodrow Community, and he passed away at his home on Sept. 9, 1999 after a lengthy illness. He was the son of the late Hugo and Ella Meyer Kraft and is a great-grandson and descendent of pioneer German immigrant, Johann Heinrich and Katherine Roege Kraft, and Conrad and Margarethe Roege, First Founders of New Braunfels and First Founders of the First German Protestant Church of New Braunfels, having arrived in the Republic of Texas in 1844 along with Prince Solms.

Mr. Kraft was a certified member of Texas First Families and registered with the State Genealogical Society and an applicant with the Sons of the Republic of Texas. He was also a member of the Sons of Herman Lodge.

He previously worked for the Texas High way Department for many years. At the time of his death, he and his wife, Frances, were co-owners of Kraft's County Store. He was a lifelong member of the First English Lutheran Church of Damon which was founded by his maternal grandparents, Charles Meyer of Germany and Helene Damek Meyer of Austria.

Hugo had been in ill health the past several years but prior to that time, he was an avid hunter and enjoyed hunting in the Hill Country with his relatives. He attended elementary school at Woodrow School and graduated from Richmond High School. He also served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the Brazoria County Cattleman's Association and a lifetime member of the Fort Bend County Fair.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hugo and Ella Meyer Kraft; his sister and brother-in-law, Max and Helen Kraft Mahlmann; and a niece, Jean Elaine Mahlmann.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Frances Urso Kraft; his sons, Hugo Kraft III and his wife, Lori Kopecky Kraft, of Woodrow Community, and Edwin Kraft of Woodrow Community; his brother, Hilbert C. Kraft and his wife, Leola Krause Kraft, of Somerville; a sister, Ella Kraft Brown and her husband, James Steven Brown, of Rosenberg; a grandchild, Kayla Brianna Kraft; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
