He was reported as Missing In Action, until it was reported on Dec. 21, 1944 to the U.S. Army that he had been taken prisoner by the Germans in WWII. He was held prisoner at Stalag 4D in Torgau (Elbe) Sashsen, Prussia maintained by the Germans. He was liberated by the U.S. Army on Feb.20, 1946. (his cousin, J.B. Layne, Jr. was among the soldiers that liberated TC) He returned home in 1946, only to die shortly after on Jan.17,1947.
