A graveside service for family and friends of Clarice Elizabeth Clifton Dempsey, 82, of Martinsville, who died Oct. 16, 2008, in Park Ridge, Ill., will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Oakwood Cemetery in Martinsville. The Rev. David Gilleran will preside.
She was born in Patrick County on Nov. 16, 1925, to Amos and Anna Lee Clifton. She had been married to John A. Dempsey for 55 years at his death, and she was also preceded in death by three sisters, Nellie Clifton, Dora Hawkins and Elma Hazelwood.
She retired from Sears and Roebuck and was a member of Hope Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are two sons, John W. Dempsey of Valdosta, Ga., and Michael C. Dempsey of Martinsville; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; five sisters, Minnie Mitchell of Summerfield, N.C., Reva Key of Gibsonville, N.C., and Bertha Blackard, Lucy Nowlin and Cora Hazelwood, all of Stuart; and one brother, Thomas Clifton of Ararat, N.C.
