Mr. Garst was a lifelong Washington County resident and a son of the late John A. and Mattie Ann Keefauver Garst.
He was a retired farmer.
Mr. Garst was a member of Pleasant Valley Church of the Brethren, where he served as a deacon, a Sunday school teacher and on the church board. He was president of the Pleasant Valley Community Club. Mr. Garst was a former secretary, treasurer and agent of Farmer's Mutual Insurance of Washington County.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, two brothers and one sister.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Pearl I. Garst; one daughter, Ann Garst Daggett, Bridgewater, Va.; two sons, Larry W. Garst, Gray, and John L. Garst, Jonesborough; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
