Mr. Garst was a native of Washington County, a son of the late John A. and Mattie Keefauver Garst.
He was a retired farmer, cattle dealer, and chairman of the board of Washington County Co-op.
Mr. Garst was a deacon and trustee of Pleasant Valley Church of the Brethren, where he also served as a Sunday school teacher.
He was secretary of Pleasant Valley Cemetery and secretary/treasurer of Old Pleasant Valley Telephone Co.
Survivors include his wife: Ruby Bacon Garst; a brother: Fred S. Garst of Jonesborough; seven nephews: Bruce Payne of Wilson, Va., Herbert “Tag” Payne and Lee Payne, both of Jonesborough, Bob Garst of Fall Branch, Larry Garst and John Garst, both of Jonesborough, and Ronnie Garst of Chuckey; and two nieces: Susie Keys of Kingsport and Ann Daggett of Bridgewater, Va.
He was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 this evening at Dillow-Taylor Funeral Home.
The funeral service will be held at 11 o’clock Tuesday morning at Pleasant Valley Church of the Brethren with interment in the church cemetery. The Rev. Don Hilton will officiate.
Nephews and great-nephews will be pallbearers.
