Paul was the youngest child of Nathaniel and Mary & was born at "Longwood" near Farmville in Prince Edward County. During the war between the states, he volunteered as a private of Co.F, 18th Va. Inf. Reg. but was promoted to Capt. of Artillery and became a member of Gen. Wade Hampton's staff. After the war he served as a Trustee of the Hampden-Sydney College from 1883-1901. He married Agnes Spruel Gray on 1/23/1865. Four of their sons & two daughters died young.
