William H. Hayes was born on 5 Feb 1834 in Liberty Township, Seneca, Ohio, USA. He married Hannah Lavinia Phillips (FAG# 103763717) (31 Jan 1837, Williams County, Ohio – 13 Oct 1906, Kalamazoo, Michigan) she was the daughter of John Phillips and Mary Catherine Heminger, on 27 Apr 1856 in Williams County, Ohio, USA. He died on 7 Jun 1864 in Acworth, Georgia of typhoid during the Civil War. Note: he is not mentioned in Lucy Hayes Cramer’s obituary. William and Hannah had five children, two boys, and one daughter

William H. Hayes was born February 5, 1834. Hannah and William were married in Williams County, Ohio, which is where Hannah grew up. Her parents are buried there in Superior Township. Hannah and William lived in Montpelier, Williams County the first few years of their marriage. It was in Montpelier that sons Frank/Francis Marion and George Washington were born. From there they moved to Jefferson Township, Noble County, Indiana in the very late 1850s. By the time the 1860 census was taken, the family was in Noble County. On January 2, 1862, William and Hannah welcome their third child, a girl named Mary Elizabeth who later married a man named George H. Staring on June 25 (possibly 22nd), 1887. Mary died less than a year later on May 5, 1888 of stomach troubles. She had been a school teacher. The Civil War broke out and William enlisted on July 19, 1862 in Kendallville, Indiana and went off to war. William died June 7, 1864 in Ackworth, Georgia of typhoid. Hannah remarried a man named John Jackson Johnson in May of 1866 in Noble County. They left Indiana not long after and moved to Gratiot County, Michigan. They lived there for several years, with a short break to Eaton County in 1873. Around 1881 or 1882, they moved to Allegan County first to Wayland, then to South Monterey Township/Monterey Township. John died first on February 14, 1902 in Monterey. Hannah died October 13, 1906. Hannah and John are both buried in Monterey Township in Poplar Hill Cemetery.
