OBITUARY - "The Times"
Gustave Krohmer, Sr., was born February 17, 1835 in Windorf, Saxonia, Germany, and died at his home in this city Monday night September 4th, 1899, after a painful and lingering illness from heart disease with other complications. He came to America in 1857 locating at Milwaukee where he remained one year and then went to Watertown where in 1862 he was married to Miss Crescentia Egle.
Mr. Krohmer was a soldier in the Civil War enlisting in Co. K, 3rd Wis. Cavalry on Nov. 14th, 1861. Here he served three years and re-enlisted in Co. E, 3rd Cavalry receiving an honorable discharge on September 8th, 1865. He participated in many battles.
With his family he came to New Lisbon in the Fall of 1868 and was a highly respected citizen of this place ever since. He was a machinist by trade, and in his younger days was considerable of an athlete. Upon arriving at New Lisbon he organized a Turn Verein and held the position of instructor. During his residence in this city he won many friends through his kind and gentlemanly disposition. Sympathetic in his nature he was dearly beloved by every member of the household.
He leaves to mourn his departure a devoted wife, and six children, viz: Mrs. Charles Reynolds, Mrs. Edwin Meredith, Miss Louisa Krohmer, Fred, George and Gust Krohmer all of whom were at his bedside when the end came. The funeral will take place from the Methodist church on Thursday (tomorrow) afternoon. Rev. W. F. Emery of Durand assisted by Rev. J. D. Searles of this city will officiate.
The local lodge A.O.U.W. which deceased was an honor member, will take charge of the services at the grave. "The Times" deeply sympathizes with the afflicted family in this their hour of sorrow and bereavement.
